Education crisis
Despite the importance of education, there is a prevailing crisis that hinders children’s access to learning. Shockingly, nearly 1.8 million children between the ages of 6 and 17 in Kenya are out of school. Many children who do attend face inconsistent attendance due to the inability of their parents to pay tuition fees, leading to missed educational opportunities.
The challenge
Education is the second largest expense in Kenyan households, with parents spending 40-60% of their income on it. The cost of education, including tuition fees, books, uniforms, and transportation, often creates financial strain and unpredictability for families. Low-income households struggle to meet these expenses, which results in inconsistent attendance and high dropout rates.
Limited Options
While the government has taken steps to reduce tuition costs through programs like Free Day Secondary Education, the financial burden remains significant. Bursaries and scholarships, although helpful, are limited in availability and often exclude average-performing students. As a result, parents resort to fundraising efforts, but the sustainability of such initiatives is uncertain.
The Impertimus Solution
At Impertimus, we are committed to ensuring access to education by providing an inclusive and sustainable funding option. Our Education Revolving Fund is designed to offer low-cost tuition fee loans to parents throughout their child’s secondary school education. Parents can access 80% of the tuition costs with a repayment period of 4 to 6 months, allowing them to cover expenses while ensuring their child’s continued education.

Let us introduce you to Peninah, a student at St. Clare Butula Girls’ Secondary School. With the support of Impertimus, Peninah’s mother, Celia, a local mutumba seller, was able to access the Education Revolving Fund. The funds provided covered the required term tuition costs, enabling Peninah to stay in school without interruptions. Upon timely repayment, Celia accessed the same amount to cover the subsequent academic terms. As a result, Peninah completed her academic years successfully, she is now a secondary school graduate awaiting to join University. We take a lot of pride in such a narrative and our efforts are geared towards multiplying the number of such stories.
